The popularity of the Dutch royal family

Written by Yannick Grenouillat

Every 27th of April, millions of people get on the streets to celebrate Kingsday. But how many people in the Netherlands still like the monarchy?

According to research by Ipsos, the support for the monarchy has remained the same compared to 2018. 68 percent of Dutch people still think that the monarchy in the Netherlands should stay. Only 15 percent want the Netherlands to become a republic.

In the research, the following fact emerged clearly. Young people appreciate the royal family considerably less than older people. Of the young people between the ages of 18 and 34, 57 percent are for the preservation of the monarchy, compared to 79 percent for Dutch people aged 55 or over. Also, 20 percent of young people want the Netherlands to become a republic.

So, the support for monarchy among young people has decreased substantially over the last years. In 2013, for example, 73 percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 34 were ahead preservation of the monarchy, in 2019 this is 57 percent. The support seems to be stabilizing and has fluctuated since 2017 between 55 and 57 percent.

Among Dutch people the age of 55 or older, the support is much higher. In 2013, 83 percent were behind the monarchy, now in 2019, it is 79 percent.

We went to the streets of Amsterdam to ask celebrants on what they think of the monarchy in the Netherlands.
