“Why can’t people just give me a fucking job?”

Caroline Ulvin Johansson was in the dressing room after her final high school performance, when she heard she had been accepted to the prestigious Bårdar Dance Academy in Oslo. Back then being a dancer was the only thing on her mind. Seven years later – Caroline is 25 years old now – she is sitting in the Benno Premselahuis, home to the faculty of Media, Information and Communication of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Being a professional dancer would have been too insecure a life, so she decided to take another path. Still now that she is studying journalism in her third year, people keep telling her she will not be able to get a steady job. Caroline could not care less. “I have so much to offer, I can do a lot of stuff. Why can’t people give me a fucking job?”

Working at NRK, Norway’s state-run broadcaster, during the summer, she discovered her talent for radio. Ultimately, her dream is to tell individual, small stories, conveying a universal message. When Caroline talks of her goals in journalism, her lively facial expressions, accompanied by distinct and sweeping gestures, give away the performer.

Caroline’s weapon in the fight for a job in the media industry is gathering as much experience as possible. “The more you can do, the more legs you have to stand on, the easier you get a job.” In the worst case, she will move on to communications. Some of her friends did and they are doing well.
